Once your travel plans have been made and the reservations are all set, it’s time to consider packing for the trip. Business travel packing should be the most stress free portion of your travel preparations. This is in no small part due to the extensive checklists and tools available here on Business Travel Gadgets.
Business clothes you should pack?
Style of Clothing – The first decision when packing your business outfits will be the style of clothing required for the occasion, business formal or business casual. If you are meeting with high level clients or company executives, perhaps three business suits / outfits would be the best option. But in general, I find business casual to be the best option for business travel.
I rarely recommend bringing more than three pairs of outfit bottoms. When picking the bottoms for your outfits, consider staying with one or two basic colors, such a black, blue or brown. This will greatly reduce the amount of coordinating before needed and keep packing to a minimum.
To go along with your bottoms, it is recommended that you pack a shirt or blouse for each day of your stay. As we recommended before, sticking with one or two basic colors for your trousers or skirts will minimize the need to bring additional tops. Select tops that will coordinate with your basic color scheme will allow you to mix and match as needed.
Jacket or Over Coat– Check the weather and determine the style of jacket that will be required for your destination. If the weather is expected to be colder than a heavier jacket will be needed. As mentioned above, stick with a color scheme or two will reduce the need for multiple jackets.
Shoes – I highly recommend bringing comfortable shoes. Regardless of the outfit, you should bring a shoe that you can wear comfortably for over 8 hours. This may not be an option if your are dressing in formal business attire, but it should be a consideration when possible.
Underwear and Socks – You should pack one pair of underwear and one pair of socks for each day of your stay, plus an additional two extra pairs of each is recommenced. Again your socks will need to match so minimize color schemes. We will mention a work out clothes later, so consider bringing athletic socks and a pair of underwear for each workout.
Pajamas – A classic style of pajama is recommended here. I can speak from experience, you never know what is going to happen in the middle of the night. And you do not want to end up evacuating a hotel in you skivvies. Particularly when your business peers are staying in the same hotel. Honestly, I take a pair of comfortable sweatpants and a tee shirt.
Workout Clothes – Traveling should not interfere with your workout regiment, so plan to pack a workout outfit for each planned workout. It is also advisable to bring along additional under garments for each workout. If you are willing you can pack one workout outfit and wash accordingly.
What else should I consider packing?
Toiletries – I typically take a trip to the travel section of the local Walmart or Target. Pick up those items that you would use if your were home. Miniature items include shampoo, soap, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, mouth wash and lots more.
Keep in mind, you are only allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the security checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Keep these items in an easily accessible compartment of your luggage, as you will be required to display these items at security.
Electronics or Laptop Bag – It will be assumed that you will be travelling with your computer on your business trip. Business travel packing should include all of the required electronic equipment you will need for your business activities. BTG will discuss in great detail your options regarding the best way to transport your valuable devices.
Travel Documents – Business travel documents should be packed and carried in a separate carrier. Once again BTG will offer several options for organizing and transporting your travel documents. Passports, Airline Tickets, Credit Cards, Travelers checks, cash, and reservations should all be on your travel document list.
Cell Phone and laptop Charger – Electronic devices are not very effective without power. Be sure that the appropriate charging devices are part of your business travel packing checklist.
Office Supplies – Be sure to include any special office supplies that may be required for your trip. Pens and pencils are pretty standard, but make a comprehensive list of any other office supplies that you will need. There is no guarantee that these item will be available at your destination.
Business Cards – The trading of business cards seems to be the first ritual of any business meeting. Bring plenty of business cards along and be sure to keep those cards you receive in a known location. Business cards are a valuable source of information both at the meeting and upon your return to the office.
Small Travel Umbrella and Rain Gear – Rain attire and a small umbrella are an often overlooked necessity on a business trip. Being prepared for that inevitable rain shower will avoid that awkward situation when you show up at your meeting sopping wet.
